Department Strands
Our Curriculum Fosters:
- Creative and critical thinking.
- Development of problem solving skills.
- Verbal communication of mathematical concepts.
- Mathematical reasoning.
- Data analysis.
- Use of technology.
- Realization of the broad application of mathematical knowledge.
Assessment:
Teachers use a variety of methods to assess students – homework, tests, quizzes, journals, portfolios, projects (group and individual) – to name a few.
The Mathematics Department offers a comprehensive four-year program for all students enrolled at Cathedral High School. Students who have taken an Algebra I course during the academic school
year in either seventh or eighth grade may opt to "test out" of Algebra I. When prospective students meet with their counselors for scheduling, they should inform their counselor that
they would like to take the Algebra Proficiency Test for either Honors Math II or Geometry. Those students who expressed an interest will receive a letter in May informing them of the testing date
in June. Successful results on that test will allow students to follow the alternative course of study.
Our Advanced Placement Program has been very successful. Advanced Placement
Calculus AB and Advance Placement Statistics are offered. With 5 being
the highest score on an A.P. Exam, our students consistently receive scores
of 4 or 5 (3 being the minimum score acceptable by colleges) allowing
them to receive college credit for Calculus and/or advance to higher levels
of Calculus or Statistics in their college freshman course of study.
Calculator Use:
Calculator use is encouraged at all levels as a tool to reinforce and enhance mathematical exploration and accelerate tedious calculations. A scientific calculator is recommended for use in most classes. The TI-83 and TI-84 Graphing Calculator series is recommended for use in upper level classes.
