Athletic Regulations

Student Contract (Adobe Acrobat Reader Required)

Academic / Attendance Requirements
All students must have a passing grade in all courses they take. An athlete participating in fall sports must have passed the final quarter of the previous year in order to participate in August/September athletics.

If a student receives three or more academic warnings during any marking period, he/she will be placed on probation, but will continue to participate in the sport. Academic performance will be reviewed after two weeks and improvement in all courses must be shown, otherwise participation in the sport will be terminated.

Poor class conduct may also result in a review of eligibility. Truancy from school will result in a one game suspension. A suspension from school means that the student cannot practice or play for the duration of the school suspension.

If the athlete is absent from school on the day of the contest or if he/she arrives at school late or leaves early, participation in practice or a game will be allowed only with the Principal’s/Athletic Director’s permission.

MIAA Regulations

Chemical Health 71.1
Medical evidence indicates that the use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, is detrimental to athletic conditioning, safety and performance. The use of drugs and alcohol by minors is illegal. In light of this information, the following code of penalties regarding the use of these substances apply and will be enforced at all school and athletic functions: "During the season of practice or play, a student shall not regardless of the quantity, use or consume, possess, buy/sell or give away any beverage containing alcohol, any tobacco product, marijuana, steroids, or any controlled substance. It is not a violation for a student to be in possession of a legally defined drug specifically prescribed for the student’s own use by his/her doctor."

Penalty – First Violation
“When the Principal confirms, following an opportunity for the student to be heard, that a violation occurred, the student shall lose eligibility for the next consecutive interscholastic contest totaling 25% of all interscholastic contests in that sport. For the student, these penalties will be determined by the season the violation occurs. No exception is permitted for a student who becomes a participant in a treatment program. It is recommended that the student be allowed to remain at practice for the purpose of rehabilitation. All decimal part of an event will be truncated i.e., all fractional part of an event will be dropped when calculating the 25% of the season.”

Second And Subsequent Violations
“When the principal confirms, following an opportunity for the student to be heard, that a violation occurred, the student shall lose eligibility for the next consecutive interscholastic contest totaling 60% of all interscholastic contests in that sport. For the student, these penalties will be determined by the season the violation occurs. All decimal part of an event will be truncated, i.e., all fractional part of an event will be dropped when calculating the 60% of the season.

If the second or subsequent violations the student of his/her own volition becomes a participant in an approved chemical dependency program or treatment program, the student may be certified for reinstatement in MIAA activities after a minimum of 40% of events. The director or a counselor of a chemical dependency treatment center must issue such certification. All decimal part of an event will be truncated, i.e., all fractional part of an event will be dropped when calculating the 40% of the season.

Penalties shall be cumulative each academic year. If the penalty period is not completed during the season of violation, the penalty shall carry over to the student’s next season of actual participation, which may affect the eligibility status of the student during the next academic year”.

Eligibility Policies and Requirements

  • All students must have a physical examination within the current school year prior to the start of the sport in which they are participating. Parents/guardians should notify the school nurse if there have been any medical concerns since the last physical. Students must also receive medical clearance from the school nurse.
  • All students must be under 19 years of age as of September 1st.
  • A student who transfers from any school into a MIAA member school, is ineligible to participate in any athletic contest, at any level, for a period of one year in all sports in which that student participated at the varsity level the previous year, unless he/she is declared eligible by the sending school principal.
  • All equipment issued at the start of each season will be returned at the end of each season in good condition or restitution made for lost or damaged equipment.
