A Brief History of Girls Soccer at Cathedral
Like all girls' sports at Cathedral, it took the visionary leadership of women committed to giving girls the opportunities to play interscholastic athletics to make Girls' Soccer a reality for Cathedral students. Sr. Beverly Rochford, SSJ was the administrator and Diane Schumacher, CHS '71, was the student who pushed girls' athletics into being at Cathedral.
Girls' soccer was first played in 1975 and from the mid-1980's on, the teams were perennial contenders for league and Western Mass Championships. Under the leadership of Mary Murray, who coached from the late 1970's until the early 2000's, the girls' soccer program at CHS grew to regional dominance. Coach Murray developed several outstanding young talents, including Katie McMahon ('92) and Gina Pantuosco ('97), who both earned Scholastic All-American honors.
In recent years Lynn Pantuosco-Hensch ('95) has led the program through several successful campaigns, and continues to develop athletes and young women of distinction.
